In today’s newspaper I read the news about a man who murdered his 1 and half year old daughter. He and his wife entered in to a dispute and in a fit of rage he banged his daughter on the floor. She was
admitted to the hospital by the time he realized what he did, she was dead. The police booked him
under the charge of a murder. In the Virar bound crowded local train Satish wanted to get down at
Naigaon station, he just asked the man standing in front of him whether he would get down at Naigaon or not, suddenly that man became angry and started abusing Satish, both of them started arguing about their respective behavior, and in the fit of rage the man pushed Satish out of the train. Now Satish is in the hospital with broken ribs and skull. Fortunately alive. We read all these kind of news and see the incidences happening around us and in the society. What is this going on? In Schools, homes, offices, Trains, buses, malls, shops. It seems everybody is carrying a volcano with him and it may explode on just very small minute thing. The man felt dishonored why because a fellow co traveler asked him whether he would alight at that station or not. The man could not control is anger due to which he banged his small kid on the floor. Suhas was telling me once, He does not like his boss. He had wished many times that he would murder his boss and his son. Why? Because he does not like his boss. I tried to dig more and he said, his boss always points to the small mistakes he does in his work. According to him he over reacts & never appreciate on whatever good he does. But he only murders his boss in his mind. Many times with different weapons and styles. What is at the root of this is Ego. To avoid above incidences and become happy Bhagwad Geeta provides a solution. Honor & Dishonor. (मान- अपमान) Ego. (Our first pride) this comes into picture. Whenever we feel dishonored we take out the sword and declare a war against the offender. Or we remove ourselves out of the society. We go to the lonely place and cry out of depression. Or this feeling goes deep in to our mind due to which we start consuming alcohol, over eating, smoking, gambling. Eventually we start those harmful activities which affects us and our family.
Lord Krishna tells us to learn tolerance. Learn to tolerate dishonor. Learn to tolerate honor. If we learn to tolerate dishonor we can be calm in any such situation, but then why do we have to be tolerant for honor? Being tolerant to honor is more difficult. Honor pleases your ego. First pride. But that should not happen. Even if somebody praises you or talks in your favor you should think that it is a grace of god and this the way you can keep yourself calm. And what if something happens exactly opposite? we have already discussed this above what happens. Just surrender your ego to the lotus feet of lord Krishna. Think whatever happens good or bad happens to his wish. He is a supreme Charioteer of your chariot of life. Let me share the 70th verse from Bhagwad Geeta chapter 2.
समुद्रमापः प्रविशन्ति यद्वत
तद्वद्कामा यम प्रविशन्ति सर्वे
स शान्तिमाप्नोति न कामकामी ||
Nature. Lord Krishna says, learn from nature. Learn from an ocean. As the Ocean filled from all the sides with water entering in it, remains still, Whatever be the quality of the water is good or bad, whether it is a pure holy water of river Ganga or a water contaminated with hazardous chemicals from a local open drain. An ocean absorbs it. In winter rivers pour in water in to it but in summers rivers become steams and cannot offer water to it. Does not matter to the ocean? Does anything goes wrong with it? Does its depth differ? No. Similarly one should remain composed in spite of all the objects or desires occurs in him (his mind) whether bad or good. Whatever be the situation he has to face good or bad. Whatever be his experience with others good or bad, once should remain composed, cool and tranquil like the ocean does. The whole spiritual path is designed to get you to the infinite happiness. What you have to do is to learn and implement your leanings in your daily life. This is what call Abhyas. Sadhana. When a Seeker. A Sadhaka starts practicing Nishkam Upasana some virtues starts appearing into him. Being tolerant is one of them. We will discuss more about different virtues Sadhaka has to have in my forthcoming posts. Till then ..
