Alright, Rima was not getting married. She was 32. She visited many Astrologers. Got various grah shanti done. Wore all those gems that the astrologer had suggested. But in vain. She is still struggling to get a suitable groom. Now somebody advised her to chant a mantra, she even started chanting that mantra. Expecting that the new practice would get her a suitable groom. Prashant wanted a victory in a court matter. Chandu wanted a success in winning a heart of a girl who he loves. Mr. & Mrs. Varma were childless since 10 years of their marriage. Abhijeet wanted to buy his dream home in Mumbai suburbs. These are some examples of worldly desires. Which is not bad at all. Without being aggressive on our desires, ambitions it would be difficult to fulfill one. Our ambitions and passion for something are our drive force. Chanting a mantra for some expected result or any form of devotion, Bhakti when put into practice for fulfillment of worldly desires is called a Sakam Upasana. More precisely, have seen people visiting bare footed to the Devi’s temple in Navratri. Seen few who lit Diya on each step of the temple. Seen few who crawled to visit a temple. Seen few who walked miles to Shirdi to seek blessings of Shri Sai baba. These are the forms of devotion a devotee offers to his deities. All is mainly practiced to gain something from their respective deities (god). And he is very kind. He listens to his devotees and fulfills their wishes. In spite of all this, even getting our desires fulfilled do we really get a peace of mind? Wants are never ending. We have participated in a rat race. Doshi family visited Dubai for shopping festival and bought many lavish household items from there like TV, Camera and Laptop etc. Mrs. Doshi showed all to her neighbor Mrs. Shah. Mrs. Doshi was very pleased to share her shopping and Dubai experience with her neighbor but then in the evening Mrs. Shah asked her loving husband to visit Dubai for shopping. She already had 2 TV sets that too LEDs, 3 high end cameras, ornaments, and what not. But still she wanted to visit Dubai why? Then with whom would she share the same that Mrs. Doshi had shared! Her husband is trying his best to earn all that she wants. And what would buy her a Dubai trip? Money. So what her husband need to run after? Money. Mr. Apte’s son is working in Silicon Valley. He is an engineer. So does, Mr. Sharma wants his son to be like Mr. Apte’s son. So he will not see the capabilities of his son but
want his son to become an engineer. What would Mr. Apte require to fulfill his desire towards his son? Money. And in spite of spending ample amount of money, putting all possible efforts if one is not getting his desire fulfilled what option he has to opt for? Sakam Upasana. Have seen girls who observed Sola Somvar vrat for getting good groom. Have seen women who observed Santan Gopal vrat to get a child. Have seen women who observed Karva Chouth for their husband’s long life. All these are forms of Sakam Upasana. This is a beginning of a person to start a walk on the divine path. But god is great, he fulfills the wishes of his devotees as if a cribbing child is given a rattle by her mother. All this is a Maya. Illusions. We are indulged into these material things and find our peace of mind, our happiness in obtaining these material things. Good looking wife. A happy married life. Good position in the society. Obedient and brilliant children. At least a 2 BHK. A 4 wheeler. A Good job with handsome salary. A good health. What else? We want more, more and more. And to some extent yes. Sakam Upasana gives us what we want. But do you still think that you will get peace of mind? All this would give birth to more lust, more desires, more anger, ire, wrath, rage, more jealousy, envy, infatuation, temptation, fascination, enticement, greed, avidity, arrogance, and Jeeva would need to take births after births after births to fulfill all this. But what is the real goal of a human life is to become Jeevanmukta. Obtain salvation. Moksha. And thus the journey begins on the path of spirituality. Which can be obtained through a form of bhakti called Nishkam Upasana and many other things to practice. The one who does is called Sadhak. Why would one want to start a walk on a divine path? Why would one want to seek salvation? We will discuss this in the next post. Till then….
